Julia Hyman: A Rising Star Taken Too Soon

A Passionate Professional on the Rise

Julia Hyman, aged 27, was a 2020 summa cum laude graduate from Cornell University’s Nolan School of Hotel Administration. She graduated with a minor in real estate and demonstrated both academic excellence and keen ambition (The Daily Beast, The Cornell Daily Sun). After relocating to New York, Julia joined Rudin Management in late 2024 as an associate—marking the beginning of a promising career in commercial real estate, within less than nine months of her new role, colleagues admired her intelligence and potential (amNewYork).

Julia’s roots traced back to a Bronx upbringing, where she attended Riverdale Country School—she excelled in soccer, swimming, and lacrosse during her high school years (Daily Voice). Driven by both ambition and values, she carried herself humbly and with purpose—a young leader in the making.

The Tragic Incident

On July 28, 2025, a gunman named Shane Devon Tamura entered 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan armed with an assault-style rifle. He had intended to target the NFL offices in the building but mistakenly rode an elevator to the 33rd floor, where Rudin Management is located. There, he fatally shot Julia Hyman and other victims, before turning the weapon on himself (The Daily Beast, The Cornell Daily Sun).

Besides Julia, three others were killed: Wesley LePatner, a Blackstone senior executive and mother of two; off-duty NYPD Officer Didarul Islam who was assisting as a security guard; and lobby security guard Aland Etienne (People.com). Authorities later noted that Tamura, suffering from severe mental health issues and claiming chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), drove from Las Vegas to commit the attack (People.com).

Legacy and Remembrance

The loss of Julia Hyman sparked an outpouring of grief across Cornell University, her workplace, and her community. Cornell’s president and the dean of her college paid tribute to her intellectual curiosity, drive, and genuine character (statements.cornell.edu, The Jewish Chronicle, The Cornell Daily Sun). Jewish organizations remembered her as a proud young Jewish woman whose life was “stolen in the Midtown shooting” and whose memory would serve as inspiration (The Jewish Chronicle).

In a statement, Rudin Management expressed deep sorrow over the senseless tragedy and emphasized how devastated the company felt by the loss of their cherished colleague, Julia (The Real Deal).
